#94, December 2, 2003 DALSVYAZ RECONSTRUCTS TELECOM SYSTEMS IN KHABAROVSKY KRAI As spokesman for Dalsvyaz reports, work to reconstruct data transfer networks in Khabarovsky Krai will be undertaken in 2004. Dalsvyaz purchased $2 million worth of equipment from Cisco Systems Inc. for this project and will provide to Khabarovsky Krai users high-speed Internet access based on xDSL technology at up to 2Mb/sec. By the New Year, Dalsvyaz will make trial connections in Khabarovsk and start mass connection of the region's subscribers in January 2004. Dalsvyaz placed its offering through the Moscow Inter-bank Currency Exchange on 19 November. As Dalsvyaz spokesman reports, 57 applications for a total of 925,611,000 rubles was submitted to determine the coupon rate. Rate in applications varied from 14% to 16.5% and was finally set at an annual rate of 14.5%. 53 applications for 896,711,000 million rubles were satisfied. The balance of 103,289 bonds was placed after bidding and the whole million of bonds was sold out during one day. Profitability of bonds is 14.74% and two-year offer profitability is 15.276%. By words of Alexey Skrylnikov, head of Securities and Capital Markets Department, placement process was successful. Adaptation to the changed state of the market was done quickly with alterations in offer terms registered, and placement was done in a very short time. MORE THAN 4 KG OF OPIUM SEIZED IN KHABAROVSK Spokesman for Drug Enforcement Office in Far Eastern Federal District told some details about this operation. A 22-year-old Gipsy was trying to sell over 4 kg of raw opium for $30,000 in front of the hotel "Tourist" in Khabarovsk. After checking the potential buyer's solvency, he made a call by mobile telephone. The narcotic in 4 plastic bags was brought to the scene by an 11-year-old Gipsy girl. The buyer took the narcotic in gloves not to leave his fingerprints on the bags. At this moment, special force hawked and detained the drug traffickers, three Gipsies and one Russian resident of Khabarovsk. RUBLES, YUANS ACCEPTABLE IN CROSS-BORDER TRADE The Construction Bank of China and Russian Savings Bank signed an agreement to settle payments for cross-border trade operations in national currencies of the two countries. A representative of the Construction Bank of China noted that, in accordance with the agreement, its branch in Heihe, Heilongjian Province and a branch of the Savings Bank in Blagoveshchensk will settle payments in Chinese and Russian currencies instead of US dollars as before. - Yury ROGOV. PRIMORYE, LIAONIN WILL SIGN AGREEMENT ON COOPERATION The agreement will be signed in Vladivostok and set forth relationships in business, entrepreneurship, product deliveries, veterinary issues, etc. Trade linkages between Primorsky Krai and Liaonin date back to 1983. This province accounts for 70% of fruit and vegetable production in China. Nearly 90% is exported to Russia. During their visit to Vladivostok, Chinese entrepreneurs and agricultural officials from Liaonin as well as theAgriculture Department of Primorsye administration presented several scores of business projects for joint work. The Chinese are ready to provide labour force and raw materials, and Russian business people are expected to provide investments, equipment, assistance in sales. 38 projects include establishment of joint ventures to produce juice, process mushrooms, vegetables, farms to raise cattle for breeding purposes, fish breeding farms, mariculture plantations. VLADIVOSTOK FISH PORT SUMMED UP RESULTS FOR TEN MONTHS VladFishPort has exceeded its yearly plan by nearly 300,000 tons since year's beginning. Its cargo turnover was 53,300 tons above the plan in October alone. As Leonid Mekhed, adviser to VFP director general, informed, plans for fish produce handling was exceeded by 4,000 tons in October and by 24,000 tons during 10 months. Revenues grew by 13%, prime cost of handling 1 ton of cargo decreased by 21%, cost per 1 ruble of sales receipts was 0.92 rubles. Average monthly salary grew by 37.5% and reached 12,057 rubles for longshoremen and 8,115 rubles (+24.6%) for production staff. During ten months, the port has handled 256 ships (207 in 2002) and 15,376 wagons (+5,758 on 2002). - Yury ROGOV. 192 HIV-INFECTED BABIES BORN IN PRIMORYE A pediatrician from Primorsky Krai AIDS Centre examined all babies born from HIV-infected mothers and registered by pediatricians in Artem City and nearby communities. 15 babies have been born in Artem area from infected mothers since April 2000 and one of them died. A total of 192 babies was born in Primorsky Krai during 5 years after 1998 and 18 died. The largest number of such children was born in last year. - Yulia PROKHOROVA.
